A prepared return deserves your attention before it is signed. Set aside time to review it, identify anything unfamiliar and ask how the figures relate to the information you provided. A signature should follow that discussion, not replace it.
Check the basic information
Confirm the identity and filing-year information shown on the return. Review the documents with the preparer through the agreed secure process. If a personal or business detail changed after intake, point it out rather than assuming it was updated everywhere.
Ask about figures you do not recognize
Bring questions about income, payments or other entries that appear different from your records. Ask the preparer to explain the source and treatment. If a document arrived late or a previously supplied figure changed, explain that before signing.
Confirm what happens next
Ask which returns will be submitted, how you will receive confirmation and what actions remain yours. Clarify any payment instructions directly; approving a return and making a payment are separate matters. Keep the final copy and related confirmations together.
The IRS says taxpayers remain accountable for the accuracy of their returns and should never sign blank tax forms. If something is unclear, ask before proceeding. Our engagement-scope guide also helps clarify what follow-up support is included.
