Business returns

Business owners often arrive with two related needs: preparation for the business and preparation for themselves. Treating them as one vague request can leave uncertainty about which returns, records and people are included.

Identify each engagement

List the business name, ownership, tax year and known tax classification. Then list the individual return or returns you want discussed. Do not assume that a business preparation quote includes every owner’s personal return. Ask the team to spell out the boundaries.

Explain where the work overlaps

Describe how you receive money from the business and where supporting records are kept. Bring questions about owner payments without guessing how they should be reported. If separate preparers handle different returns, ask what information they will need from each other and who will coordinate the exchange.

Plan around missing information

Some documents may not be ready at the same time as others. Make a list of what is expected, who supplies it and its current status. Share changes with the preparer rather than silently replacing an earlier file. Confirm the filing plan directly when a required item remains outstanding.

The IRS explains that business form affects the income tax return used. Your preparer needs the actual facts and records, not just the company’s marketing name. Start with business tax preparation and mention the personal returns you also want included.
