“I have an LLC” is a useful starting point, but it is not a complete description of your filing situation. A preparation conversation should establish the business’s ownership and available tax records before deciding the work involved.

Bring the identity records

Gather the formation information you have, the business’s legal name and any tax-election correspondence. Note the owners and whether ownership changed during the year. Provide sensitive identification documents only through the transfer method agreed with the preparer.

Separate legal structure from assumptions

The IRS identifies an LLC as a structure created under state law and provides separate guidance on its tax treatment. Do not infer the filing arrangement from the letters LLC on an invoice. If you do not know the classification, say that in your inquiry and ask which records will establish it.

Describe the actual activity

Explain when operations began, what the company does and where its books are kept. Identify other entities with similar names so their records are not combined accidentally. Include questions about money paid to or contributed by owners on a separate list for review.

A practical first step is a one-page business overview with the tax years involved and the records you can locate. ASI can use that overview to discuss business preparation and any additional accounting work before confirming an engagement.
