Getting started

Changing preparers is easier when the new team can distinguish completed work from work still in progress. Before transferring documents, make a short handoff summary: the last year filed, the returns you need next and any unresolved questions.

List what has already happened

Record whether a return was prepared, signed, submitted or accepted. Those are different milestones. Keep filing acknowledgments with the relevant return instead of relying on a draft marked final. If you are uncertain about a filing, say so clearly and ask what evidence would resolve it.

Request a usable records package

Ask your prior preparer what records are available to transfer. Identify the returns, schedules and accounting reports you already have. Let the new team explain which additional files it needs; avoid sending several unlabeled versions of the same document. Confirm any outstanding work or invoices directly with the prior provider.

Define the new engagement

A new preparation engagement does not automatically include reviewing every previous filing. Explain any concerns about earlier returns and ask whether reviewing them would be separate work. Also clarify who handles current deadlines while the transition occurs.

At the first meeting, agree on the primary contact, next deliverables and method for sharing records. Our preparer-selection guide offers questions to help compare the working relationship, not just the quoted fee.
