Two preparation quotes can look different because they describe different work. Before deciding which is suitable, ask each provider to identify the returns, filing years and related tasks included in the estimate.

Separate preparation from supporting work

Bookkeeping cleanup, prior-year review and responding to notices may require work beyond preparing a current return. If your records are incomplete, describe that upfront. Ask whether the quote assumes a finished set of books or includes bringing them into a usable condition.

Clarify the boundaries

For a business owner, ask whether individual returns are included. Identify additional entities or state questions rather than assuming they fall within a single business fee. Ask how the provider handles new information that changes the scope after work begins.

Know the next decision point

A useful process gives you a chance to understand additional work before it is performed. Discuss how the team will communicate revised estimates, request missing records and explain what remains outside the engagement. Keep the agreed scope with your preparation records.

Avoid comparing providers on a promised refund. The IRS cautions against refund-based fees and claims of larger refunds. When contacting ASI, explain the situation and ask for the work and fees to be confirmed directly. Our selection guide includes questions about the broader working relationship.
