The right first conversation should help you understand what work is needed and who will do it. A quoted price alone does not tell you whether an engagement covers your business return, personal return, state filings or questions after filing.
Describe the work before comparing fees
Write down the years involved, whether you need business or individual preparation, and any changes since your last return. A business owner might need one conversation covering company records and a separate personal filing. Ask which returns are included and whether bookkeeping cleanup, amendments or additional states would change the scope.
Ask who prepares and signs your return
The IRS says paid preparers must have a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Ask who will sign your return and how you can reach them after filing. Check any claimed credentials rather than assuming that every tax preparer has the same qualifications or representation rights.
Expect questions about your records
A useful intake is more than a request for last year’s refund amount. Be ready to discuss income documents, business activity and missing information. The IRS cautions against promises of larger refunds and fees based on a percentage of the refund. Review your completed return before signing and keep a copy.
Bring a short comparison list
- Which returns and filing years are included?
- Who is my contact, and who signs the return?
- What records do you need before confirming the work?
- How are fees and additional work explained?
- How do we handle follow-up questions?
When you request an ASI consultation, start with your contact details and the work you want to discuss. You can use those same questions to make the engagement clearer before providing documents.
