When someone asks for “last year’s taxes,” clarify the exact record needed. A return copy, a filing acknowledgment, an account record and an IRS transcript can answer different questions. Naming the question first avoids unnecessary searching.

Ask what the record needs to show

Is the preparer trying to review the information submitted, confirm a payment or understand account activity? Write down that purpose and the tax year. The answer helps determine which document to request and whether supporting schedules are also needed.

Check your existing files

Look for the complete return package supplied by your prior preparer and distinguish it from an unsigned draft. Check whether separate attachments or state returns were delivered in other files. Keep filenames intact until you understand what each file contains.

Use the official request options

The IRS records page explains its transcript options and how to obtain tax records. Follow the official process and ask your preparer which type is appropriate. Do not assume a transcript contains every item that was included in the original preparation package.

After obtaining a record, tell the preparer what you received and through which process. If a page or schedule is still missing, keep that on the open-item list. Our document recovery guide provides a simple way to track the remaining requests.
